Bob Debus's political career spanned more than two decades (1981 to 2009). He held several Ministerial positions in the New South Wales Government, including Attorney General and Minister for the Environment (March 2003 - March 2007); Minister for Employment (1984 to 1986); and Minister for Finance and Co-operative Societies (1984 to 1988). He retired from state politics at the March 2007 election and won the Federal seat of Macquarie at the federal election in 2007. He was appointed Minister for Home Affairs in the First Rudd Ministry. Bob Debus relinquished his portfolio in June 2010 after deciding not to recontest his seat in the Federal election.

On 28 November 2011, Bob Debus was announced Chairman of the independent Land Sector Carbon and Biodiversity Board. The Board will provide advice to Government on implementation of the Land Sector Package announced as part of the Clean Energy Future Plan.
